About the Department:

The Commerce Department of Chakdaha College was established in the year of 1972, which initially offered a two-year-long B.Com Pass course until it got the affiliation to provide a B.Com Honours course of the duration of 3 years in the year of 1981. At present it has become the college’s one of the leading departments with distinguished faculties. There are two (out of four sanctioned posts) full-time, three SACT, involved in daily teaching-learning process. Moreover, the department publishes a wall magazine titled ‘Drishtidhara’ from the year 2015. There is also a Departmental Library consisting of more than a hundred books related to the subject. Accordingly, the Department of Commerce of Chakdaha College is getting better every day at providing students with high-quality education. The faculties of the department have experience of conducting UG study in Commerce, approved by NSOU since the course was started. The department has highly qualified (Ph.D, M.Phil, NET, CMA) faculties. Consequently, a large number of students desire to take admission to the department since its inception. Teachers of this department are committed to teach their top-of-the-line and offer high quality education to the students. Thus, the pass rate from this department has been notably high. It always stays at the rate more or less of 95%. Consequently, the students from the department pass the university exam with notable ranks. Teachers are also intensively engaged in research work and published papers in reputed journals/books on a regular basis. The department hopes to grow its national and international exposure further in the near future. To do so, it has sent a proposal to the UGC to approve and fund a national-level seminar on the topic ‘Parental Migration, Paid Child Labour and Human Capital Formation’ in the year of 2016.

It also considers to conduct very soon multiple international-level seminars independently and/or in collaboration with eminent international personalities who specialise in Accounts and Finance. Moreover, the department also thinks about launching Diploma and/or Certificate course in collaboration with renowned professional bodies and universities from India. It also has some thoughts about conducting an excursion program in the near future. On top of that, the department opines that enhanced communicative language skills are very important for the students to ensure an ample career in the future. So, it is considering very seriously to organise a Language Skill Development Program shortly.

And finally, it has sketched out a plan of arranging an event under the title ‘Stock Market Analysis and Investment Strategies’, which, the department believes, would be of great help to all the students and people interested in the subject out there. The department regularly arranges special lectures by distinguished experts/ professors/ professionals from notable institutions across India and abroad.

It is worth noting that very recently the department, in collaboration with the Institute of Cost Accountants of India organised a 100-hour National Skill Development (NSDP) course for the students which was funded by Hindustan Aeronautical Limited (HAL). Students claimed that they were hugely benefited from the course. It has also organised a one-day seminar on Capital Market Awareness where the lecturer was the authorised representative of the SEBI.

The Honourable Chairman of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India, EIRC delivered exceptional talks on the topics titled, ‘Marginal Costing and Decision Making’ and ‘Career Counselling and Skill Development’ in one of the seminars organised by the department.

Moreover, it has also arranged three extension lectures in the year 2015 & 2017 where Prof. Basab Chandra Chanda, Associate Professor of Commerce, Ranaghat College, Nadia and Prof. Debandra Shaw, Assistant Professor, Umesh Chandra College, Kolkata gave their lectures.

A Career counselling programme had also been held by the George Telegraph Institute, Kolkata in the same year. It has taken another initiative in association with The Institute Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and D. L.
