The Department of Zoology, Chakdaha College, started imparting teaching of B.Sc. General Course from 1993 and B.Sc. Honours course in Zoology from 2000. Both of these 3-year degree courses ended in the year 2019, then CBCS curriculum (semester based) has been introduced since the session 2018-2019 and now the department is offering 4 years degree courses under UG NEP-2020 curriculum. Within a span of 22 years, the department has successfully emerged as one of the leading centres of excellence amongst departments of Zoology under Kalyani University. The department’s reputation for excellence so far is due to its way of handling and generating a number of potential students presently engaged in either teaching or research activities inside the country or abroad. Among such a good percentage of successful students, most are NET, GATE or SET qualifiers. Besides attaining such an academic pursuit, a number of seminars, webinars, syllabus oriented workshop, etc. have been organized to heighten our academic activities, certainly for the well-being of our students. In the due course, the department has succeeded in attaining the requisite basic amenities like classrooms and laboratories with well-equipped museums to attract students to get imbued with the subject. Over and above, our college, for its blended characteristic attributes between town and village, has a quite ambient environment to interact with the society to meet up the burning issues pertaining to biodiversity loss, health hazards, snake bite problem, thalassaemia disorder etc. We, the teachers and students of this department jointly, have accomplished some of these activities by way of organizing some awareness programmes; still much is to be done in the coming days. Though quantitatively, these are some achievements from our part, the overall quality of the students in developing conceptual and cognitive ideas over the subject needs to be encouraged more. At the same time, for the beneficence of surrounding society with regard to the burning issues already mentioned, our endeavor needs to get much fostered by way of close and interactive liaisons among teaching and student communities, and obviously with people in general.
